(Imam Husain A.S)

Today is the auspicious 3rd of Sha’ban, the blessed birthday of the Symbol of Freedom, Imam Hussein (peace be upon him). We have prepared for you a special article on the life of the younger grandson of Prophet Mohammad (blessings of Allah be upon him and his progeny). Excerpt of this article is as follows:

Six months after Imam Hassan was born, Fatima(s.a.) became pregnant with her second child.Bibi Fatima started noticing the signs that childbearing was near, but the Prophet (s.a.w.) had already foretold of Imam Hussin’s birth.

On the third of the blessed month of Sha’ban, the fourth year after Hijra, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) was given news of the birth of Imam Hussein (a.s.). He (s.a.w.) hurried to the house of Imam Ali and Fatima al-Zahra.

Safia Bint Abdul Muttalib, Asma Bint Umais, and Um Salama were present when Imam Hussein was born.

When the Prophet asked Safia (his aunt) to bring him the newborn child, she said: “We have not cleaned him yet.” When the Prophet heard this, he (s.a.w.) said: “You clean him? Surely Allah the Exalted has cleaned and purified him”

Asma took the newborn child to him.

The infant was wrapped in a piece of cloth. The face of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) lit up upon seeing his grandson. He took him in his arms. He recited the call to prayer (adan) into his right ear, and read the shorter version (iqama) in his left ear. He, then, placed the baby in his lap and wept.

“May my father and mother be your sacrifice,” Asma asked him, “why are you crying?”

“Because of my son,” he (s.a.w) replied.

“He is a newborn baby,” she said.

“O Asma,” he (s.a.w) said, “After me, the transgressing party will kill him. May Allah never grant them my intercession.”

Then he said: “Asma, do not tell Fatima about this, for she has just given birth to him.”

After Al-Hussein was born, Gabriel descended to the Prophet (s.a.w.) and revealed to him to give the new baby the name Al-Hussain. Al-Hussain is the Arabic version of the old Hebrew name Shabir, which was Haroun’s second son’s name. When Gabriel descended to the Prophet, scores of angels accompanied him to congratulate and console the Prophet for Hussain’s birth and expected martyrdom.

On the seventh day of the birth of Imam Hussain(a.s.), Prophet Mohammad(pbuh)

went to the house of Bibi Fatima(s.a.) and a lamb was slaughtered to mark the aqeeqa. On the order of Prophet(pbuh&hf), the head of the baby was shoven and silver in the equivalent weight was given as sadqa.

“Some people serve Allah desiring His rewards. It is the worship of merchants. Some people serve Allah out of fear. It is the worship of slaves. And some people serve Allah out of gratitude. This is the worship of the free, and it is the best kind of worship.”

The life of Imam Hussein (AS) shows that he grew up in the most blessed atmosphere. His grandfather was Prophet Mohammad (SAWA), his mother was Hazrat Fatema (SA), his father was Imam Ali (AS), and his brother was Imam Hasan (SA). The Prophet in a famous saying described his two grandsons as Leaders of the Youth of Paradise. The Prophet used to carry Hussein on his shoulder and kiss him.

The Prophet used to say: “Hussein is from me and I am from Hussein. Allah loves whoever loves Hussein.”

The great personality of Imam Hussein (AS) drew the attention of people. In addition to his kind visage, the Imam was eloquent. His statements influenced hearts and minds. Even an avowed enemy of the Prophet’s Household, such as Mua’wiyah ibn Abu Sufyan, once said to a member of his clan: “If someday you entered a mosque and saw that a crowd is sitting silent and listening carefully, be aware that Hussein is talking to the people.”One of the interesting manifestations in the personality and ideas of Imam Hussein (AS) was his deep cognizance of God and his sincere love and devotion towards the Creator of the universe. This very deep awareness became the basis of his decision-makings and reforming moves in the society.Once Imam Hussein (AS) was asked how much he fears God? He answered; no one is immune from the Day of Resurrection except the one who fears God in this world.” What the Imam meant by fear of God is that mankind should always consider God to be observing his acts and should fear disobeying Allah. It means the awareness of God and love for the Almighty Creator. Imam Hussein’s devotion to God was to the extent that even during the uprising of Karbala and on the last day of his life he asked the enemy to delay the battle till the following morning. He said: “This night we want to spend in worship and prayer to our Lord.

God knows that I love to offer may prayer to Him, recite His book, and pray much asking for forgiveness.” If we have a precise look at the society of half a century after the Prophet we become aware that along with the expansion of the territory of Islam, certain distortions crept in the political, economic and social spheres, in a way that power-seeking and hoarding of wealth became the signs of progress.

Under those circumstances, the great personality such as Imam Hussein (AS) could not keep silent and witness the decline of the ideals of the true religion of Islam. Imam Hussein (AS) was a silent witness to these sad events that led to the martyrdom of his father Imam Ali (AS) in the Mosque of Kufa and the end of the model government of justice. The Imam then saw how the Rebel Governor of Syria, Mu’awiyah, deceived people to the extent that his elder brother, Imam Hasan (AS), had to sign the peace treaty to expose hypocrisy in society. Ten years later, Imam Hasan (AS) was martyred as a result of poisoning administered on the instructions of Mu’awiyah. The next ten years Imam Hussein (AS) watched the affairs take a pathetic turn. In the year 60 AH, Mu’awiyah violated yet another clause of the treaty that he made with Imam Hasan (AS) by nominating his libertine son Yazid as the caliph. This was unbearable. How could Imam Hussein (AS) as the rightful successor of Imam Hasan (AS), Imam Ali (AS) and Prophet Mohammad (SAWA) acknowledge the rule of such an infidel as Yazid. He refused and the events rapidly led to the heroic uprising of Karbala. Although, Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred in a most tragic manner along with two of his sons, brothers, nephews, other male members of the Prophet’s blessed family and his loyal companions, the victory belonged to him and not to Yazid. Karbala was the catalyst to uplift human conscience and set the example of not yielding to oppression and injustice. It was the triumph of blood over swords. The great sacrifice of Imam Hussein (AS) was purely for the sake of God. It was not meant for his own generation but was meant for all generations to come, as is evident till this day from the powerful effect that Imam Hussein (AS) and Karbala have inspiring the struggle against injustice and oppression. Allah granted the Imam Hussein (AS) the immortal victory that continues to resonate till this day.
